I am going to keep this review short as this film should be watched without reading detailed reviews which can lessen the joy of tiny things you get to watch. The theme in this film is about what it means to be human, the call of duty and our power of love. The film Gravity felt more real. This is more of drama and less thrills but it is very enjoyable in its own way. I liked Matthew McConaughey here (who practically carried the whole film) and even Jessica Chastain but Anne Hathaway was plain. Like the acting, the set pieces and visuals are well done. However, the characters arcs are all half baked as there is too much of other things to fit in. The ending is super sentimental and i think a hard sell. The most memorable dialogues are from the AI robots! Fyi, my benchmark for such sci-fi film is "Contact" which I have seen many times over.

War is just insanity and soul sucking. This is the meaning of "war is hell". The film is simple but brutally honest (even if little melodramatic) and that's rare for a Hollywood film (not your usual glorified and patriotic propaganda film). This is humanity, bared naked, standing at the very edge of its mental breaking point. Oscillating between moments of sheer boredom to utter fearfulness. However this doesn't come close to the benchmark of all war films: Apocalypse Now. But I am still in awe of Roman Vasnyanov’s gritty, rugged cinematography. Be sure to watch it in IMAX if you love tank action. Oscar winning composer Steven Price (Gravity) has scored this film. Price utilized actual World War II weaponry, including a .50 caliber machine gun, along with a bag filled with dog tags, to create the industrial, treading percussion sounds that echo the bombast of tank warfare. Price wrote parts of the score with cellos and a small, intimate choir, to portray the inner angst and bond between the war-torn soldiers. The choir motif was used for high-energy battle scenes and calmer, as well as more introspective passages of the score, a humanism element in a score that seeks to portray the harrowing mechanizations of war. |
