”Do not be satisfied with the stories that come before you. Unfold your own myth.” – Rumi. The story has two distinctly different parts. The first part is a frothy love story between two cool people (similar to Before Sunrise, 1995) but the underlying message is about the freedom and control of our society and parents (or lack of) over us. The film proudly wears on it sleeves that all love stories are the same. The pretty heroine comes from a very wealthy background who's life is different from the common-class protagonist. However, they formed a deeper connection due to circumstances. Her fantasy, immaturity and confusion acts a catalyst which leads to a crisis with our protagonist. But, this not her story (she is probably just bored with life), its his. He has to now, make tough choices about his "mediocre" joyless life. The second part begins as the love-affair ends. It is a self-discovery story where our protagonist has a quest to be true to oneself. The world is itself too harsh a place but he has to chose whether to leave his comfort zone, and brave the world. The protagonist tries to find out how to really love himself and in doing so finds out how to live life for himself. The tragic grandeur gets a bit long-winded and overbearing in the second half, however, personally I feel its an admirable film.
